Google’s internet browser, Chrome, has recently added extensions to their browser functionality. They are now in the big leagues along with the other popular browsers, allowing their users to go crazy with customisations and modifications. We like this, as it’s fun to play!
Here’s a few that I tried out:
Feedly – totally does what it says on the box: “A fast and stylish way to read and share the content of your favorite sites and services”. It has a magazine-like look ‘n feel and let’s you quickly and easily grab relevant-to-you information from websites that you like. I did a search for “Cape Town” and got great results that I can check in with daily. Here’s a screenshot:
Evernote web clipper – This is really handy for saving web pages and making notes in Evernote. You must have an Evernote account and be signed in. From some of the online comments, it would appear that Mac users are having problems with this extension, so be warned.
Google quick scroll – Let’s you find the relevant information much faster. I did a really arb search for “excel hidden worksheet”, then I clicked on one of the results links (MSDN, to be exact). As I started to scroll down the page, a little Google window appeared in the bottom right-hand side which highlighted the phrase I had searched. I could access the phrase by clicking on the link. So it’s not dissimilar to Ctrl+F, only quicker and more accurate.
That’s a tiny little peek into the world of Google Chrome extensions. You may also want to read the ReadWriteWeb article on how to enter safe-mode when extensions break your browser before you try it out. Rather safe than sorry.
Hope you have endless hours of fun playing in the Chrome extensions sandbox!
